Big second half propels men's soccer to win

TACOMA, Wash. – The Pacific Lutheran men's soccer team wrapped up a perfect opening weekend Monday with a 3-1 victory against visiting Colorado College at East Field.

Cris Lozano, Craig Johnson and Trevor Thompson all scored to lead the Lutes (3-0 overall) to a third consecutive win to open the season.

Lozano scored his second on the young season in the 49th minute off an assist from a Trevor Thompson corner kick. Lozano corralled the looping ball and kicked it hard into traffic, where it eventually found the back of the net.

One minute later, the Lutes scored again as Johnson scored on another assist from Thompson for a quick 2-0 lead.

The Tigers began pouring pressure forward and eventually scored on an Olimpico by Sajjan Singh, as he curled in a ball from a corner kick.

Goalkeeper Nicholas Gaston then made two strong saves on a potential game-tying goal and eventually Thompson iced the game with a breakaway goal in the final seconds. A pass by Lozano on the counterattack led to Thompson slotting the ball into the lower right corner of the net.

Gaston finished with nine saves, as the Lutes were outshot 19-10 including 10-5 on goal.

The Lutes hit the road for the first time this season, heading to Salem, Ore., for a 5 p.m. Friday game against California Lutheran and a 2:30 p.m. Sunday game against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
