TACOMA, Wash. — Sean McCurdy and
Brandin Riedel both finished with double-doubles to power the Pacific Lutheran University men's basketball team to a 90-76 victory over Northwest Conference rival Pacific University on Saturday night inside Olson Gymnasium.
A Boxer (9-8, 4-4 NWC) three put the visitors up 7-6 just under two minutes into the game but in what proved to be their lone lead of the night. Riedel drained a layup on the next possession to give the lead back to the homestanding Lutes (9-8, 3-5 NWC) before getting a layup from
Sam Noland and a
Jackson Reisner three to take a 13-7 advantage with 16:19 left in the opening stanza.
The Lute lead continued to swell, hitting double digits for the first time on a Noland three with 11:51 left before mushrooming to 15 off a McCurdy trey. PLU ended the high-octane first half with a Riedel layup, taking a 51-40 lead into the locker room.
PLU's lead touched 16 early in the second only to be whittled down to just eight with 9:53 remaining. PLU more than answered the call, getting consecutive treys from Reisner along with a three from
Jack Williams, all part of an 11-0 run to establish a 19-point gap with 7:57 remaining. That lead remained at least 14 the rest of the way for the Lutes' third win in their last four outings.
"Brandin really set the tone of the game early with some nice buckets from transition opportunities and in the half court. And because of that it opened up our three-point shooting from Jackson, Sean, and Sam," said Head Coach
Chad Murray.
"We had an answer every time they made a push which was great to see. The guys maintained their poise throughout and while we piled up some turnovers we still were able to capitalize when we generated the shots we wanted."
Riedel led all scorers with 25 points while also hauling in 11 rebounds, shooting nine-for-14 from the floor. McCurdy notched his fourth double-double in the last six games, pouring on 22 points with a game-high 14 boards. Noland added 19 points with Reisner and Williams adding 14 and 10, respectively.
Shane McGaughey-Fick matched a season-high by dishing out 11 assists.
PLU drained 11 threes on the night, shooting 52.4 percent from beyond the arc while hitting 59.3 percent (32-for-54) of shots from the field.
Pacific Lutheran returns to the court on Friday, making the trip across the state to face Whitworth University in Spokane. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m.
