McMINNVILLE, Ore.— The Northwest Conference leading Pacific Lutheran University volleyball team made quick work of Linfield University on Friday night, blasting the hosts 3-0 (25-21, 25-10, 25-20) inside the Ted Wilson Gymnasium to extend its win streak to 10.
"It was a great two days for our team having to adjust our schedule to play Thursday and Friday," said Head Coach
Kevin Aoki.
"So proud of this team and what we've accomplished so far, but we all know we have so much more in us."
The opening set was a tight affair that saw the Lutes (11-7, 10-0 NWC) hold a slim 21-20 edge before ripping off four of the final five points to secure the 25-21 set win. A
Baylee Johnson kill kickstarted the run that saw the Lutes get points on a block by Johnson and
Haley Goto, a Goto kill, and a set clinching attack error from the Wildcats (7-9, 3-6 NWC).
The Lutes scored the opening five points of the second set, including a pair of aces from
Olivia Evaro and never looked back. PLU closed the set by scoring the final four points including a set clinching kill from
Alazah Faumui to wrap up the dominating 25-10 victory.
Linfield led 14-13 in the third set but a service error and a Goto kill, tilted the scales back in favor of the Lutes. PLU would lead the rest of the way, scoring the final three points, including two aces from
Torie Takeuchi, including the match sealing point to deliver the 25-20 set win and the Lutes' sixth sweep of league play.Â
Elle Thomas led the Lutes with 10 kills while Johnson added nine. Evaro posted 32 assists and 10 digs on the evening while Goto had a team-best five blocks.
Halle Hetzler led PLU with 14 digs in the win with Takeuchi adding 11.
The Lutes' next four matches will be in Tacoma, beginning on Wednesday night when they travel across town to face the University of Puget Sound. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
"We're looking forward to playing UPS on their home court on Wednesday."
