Four Different Scorers Lead Lutes Past the Pirates

SPOKANE, WASH. --- The Pacific Lutheran Men's Soccer team went east to take on the Pirates of Whitworth University on Saturday, coming away with a 4-2 victory and remain unbeaten in Northwest Conference play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Both teams traded shots in the first half, as the Lutes were unable to get a shot on goal early. But following four consecutive corner kicks, the Lutes broke the scoring open with a goal from freshman Alvin Kamau.

Junior Trevor Thompson and senior Craig Johnson continued to fire shots but were not able to get one on goal. The Pirates evened the score in the 27th minute, getting past senior goalkeeper Nicholas Gaston.

Freshman Owen Bliskis, a recent contributor to the Lutes high-scoring wins, put the Lutes back on top in the 43rd minute just before the end of the half. The Lutes outshot the Pirates by a wide margin in the first half, 10-2.

The beginning of the second half was a defensive battle but didn't last too long as Whitworth tied the game once again in the 60th minute. Five minutes later, the Lutes answered right back as Johnson got past the keeper for his score, 3-2 Lutes.

With a strong defense finding their groove, the Lutes continued to add to their lead in the 73rd minute as Thompson was able to score in the lower left corner of the Pirates goal.

The Lutes would go on to win the game 4-2, following a pair of yellow cards to each team late in the game due to a scuffle in the Pirates offensive half. Cards were issued to seniors Dane Helle and Cole Dobson.

INSIDE THE STATS
