Thomas & Johnson Power Lutes Past Bruins

TACOMA, Wash. — Elle Thomas and Baylee Johnson combined for 32 kills as the Pacific Lutheran University volleyball team padded its lead atop the Northwest Conference standings on Friday night, downing George Fox University 3-1 (26-24, 25-17, 17-25, 25-18) inside Olson Gymnasium.

With first place in the league standings on the line, the visiting Bruins (9-5, 5-2 NWC) had the Lutes (8-7, 7-0 NWC) against the ropes in the opening set. The Lutes trailed 24-22 before capitalizing on Bruin miscues, scoring the next four points, including a pair of blocks from Hailey Goto to escape with the 26-24 victory in the opening set.

PLU's late set heroics carried over to the second set, ripping off eight straight points, including seven off the serve of Halle Hetzler and 10 of the first 11 points. The Lutes would enjoy a comfortable lead the rest of the set with an Elle Thomas block securing the 25-17 set victory.

George Fox avoided the sweep in the fourth, using a 6-1 run midway through the set to take the lead for good and walk away with the 25-17 victory in set three.

The Bruins led 8-4 early in the fourth but the Lutes proved to be too strong down the stretch. Four kills from Johnson during a 8-1 run turned a 10-7 deficit into a 15-11 lead and the Lutes never looked back. Thomas closed out the set with a bang, netting her 17th kill of the night to wrap up the set 25-18 and give PLU its seventh straight win.

Thomas led the Lutes with a season-high 17 kills while also adding five blocks while Johnson had 15 kills and a .310 attack percentage. Olivia Evaro had a match-high 45 assists while defensively Hetzler had a match-high 34 digs. Torie Takeuchi finished with 21 digs while Makenna Jackson and Sydney Aoki added 17 and 14, respectively.

The win keeps Pacific Lutheran as the only undefeated team in NWC action and further cushions its lead in first place, with the next closest teams both having two blemishes in league play including a head-to-head loss against the Lutes.
PLU's homestand resumes tomorrow night, hosting Lewis & Clark College at 6 p.m.
