Men's Soccer Completes Season Sweep Over Puget Sound With 3-1 Victory

TACOMA, WASH. --- The Pacific Lutheran Men's Soccer team completed the season sweep over the Puget Sound Loggers on Wednesday in the rain and under the lights with a 3-1 victory on East Field. Senior forward Robby Guyer scored the game-sealing goal in the 88th minute to keep the Lutes undefeated at home this season.

The Lutes offense looked to repeat their performance against the Loggers on the road earlier this season where they scored four-straight in a 6-2 victory. They began the game with similar momentum, taking an early 1-0 lead as junior forward Trevor Thompson raced down the sideline and beat the goalkeeper, finding the inside of the far post to give the Lutes a 1-0 lead just seven minutes into the match.

As the offense progressed, the defense showed why they lead in many statistical categories in the Northwest Conference not allowing a shot for the first 32 minutes of the game.

In the 31st minute, as senior goalkeeper Nicholas Gaston possessed the ball off of a Loggers corner attempt, he fired the ball across the turf to Guyer in the midfield, who would immediate find Thompson streaking past the Loggers defense. In a one-on-one with the keeper, there's no stopping Thompson, as he rifled a shot to the back of the net to give the Lutes a 2-0 cushion in the first half.

But just one minute later, the Loggers forced Gaston out of the box, where he would foul the Loggers striker one-on-one, earning a yellow card and a free kick for UPS. The Loggers would execute on the free try, cutting the Lutes lead to just one.

The second period began much like the first, with the Lutes offense putting pressure on the opposition out of the gate. The Lutes fired six shots over the course of seven minutes as Thompson and seniors, Craig Johnson and Dane Helle, were unable to get one past the keeper.

Once again, the Lutes held the Loggers without a shot attempt for the opening 22 minutes of the half. But with the game still within reach, the Loggers best opportunity came in the 87th minute as they fired a shot from the top of the box that hovered above the turf but Gaston was able to smother the ball and make the save.

Minutes later, as the clock wound down, the Loggers tried to flip the field but in doing so, the Lutes were able to counter with a long-ball down the field to Guyer. The ball took one hop and forced the Loggers keeper out of the box where he would collide with the one Logger defender left. The collision would cause the ball to ricochet down the field and end up at Guyer's feet with nobody left to beat. Guyer would put the exclamation mark on the game in the 88th minute, giving the Lutes a 3-1 victory.

The Lutes dominated in the box score with 22 total shots and 10 of which being on-target. Gaston made two saves in the game on three shots on goal against. The PLU Men's Soccer team would extend their win streak over UPS to four games, completing the second consecutive season sweep of the Loggers. Over the past four matchups, the Lutes have outscored the Loggers 14-3.

With the Northwest Conference title locked up, the Lutes will look to put a bow on a spectacular regular season on the road against the Willamette Bearcats on Saturday in Salem, Oregon at 1:30 p.m.
