Baseball Earns Texas-Sized Sweep

AUSTIN, Texas - The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team scored 20 runs on Saturday afternoon, earning a doubleheader sweep at Gardner-Boggs Field. The Lutes blasted Hardin-Simmons University 8-3 to open the day before trouncing Texas Lutheran University 12-2.

The Lutes (4-2) pounced early against Hardin-Simmons, piling on seven runs in the opening three innings. A Cole Trotignon single plated Andy Schmitz in the bottom of the first for the game's first run before getting RBI singles from Braeden Lundberg and Andy Schmitz in the second inning.

The Lute lead swelled to 7-0 in the third with RBI singles from Ashton Barton, Brody Phinney and Alex Boyd. The Cowboys (0-3) got on the board with single runs in the fourth and sixth before PLU added an insurance run in the sixth courtesy of an Aaron Barber double down the line.

Hardin-Simmons scratched across another score in the eighth but it wasn't enough as PLU cruised to the 8-3 win.

PLU cranked out 11 hits with Schmitz, Barber, Trotignon, and Sean Kauffman all finishing with a pair of hits.

Landon Day registered his first career win on the hill, striking out five in six innings of work. Jonathan Cohen handled the final three frames, fanning two to notch the save.

"We had good energy and effort today," said Head Coach Nolan Soete.

"Day got his first college start and Cohen put in several innings of quality relief in game one. Offensively, we had a lot of quality at bats, Kauffman was on base four times."

In game two, the Lutes piled on five runs in the third inning to overwhelm the Bulldogs to close out the day undefeated.

Texas Lutheran (2-2) struck first with a run in the second inning before the Lutes' offense came alive with two outs in the third. Barber reached base with a single to left field with two outs, scoring the next at-bat to tie the game. A Barton double made it 2-1 Lutes before getting an RBI double from Ethan Keintz, and RBI singles from Phinney and Lukas Delisle.

A Lundberg sac fly made it 6-1 in the fifth before a solo home run from Schmitz made it 7-1 the next inning. PLU's offense continued to thrive in the eighth, piling on four more runs. Barton and Keintz had RBI base hits with a Phinney single to right plating a pair of scores to seize a commanding 12-1 lead.

TLU plated another run in the ninth but it wasn't enough to close the gap any more as the Lutes swept the day.

Phinney went two-for-five with three RBIs while Barber collected a trio of hits. Nine different players notched a base hit for PLU, outslugging the Bulldogs 14-6.

Cole Trotignon earned the win on the mound, allowing just four hits in five innings of work. Trevor Mason pitched two innings of scoreless relief while Jaden Pieper and Jake Sulya finished off the Bulldogs in the final two innings.

"Trotignon set the tone on the mound. He did a great job grinding and making good pitches against a good TLU lineup and Mason did a good job in relief. Barber, Schmitz, Barton, and Keintz had great at bats all day. Overall it was good to get two quality wins."

The Lutes close out their Texas road swing tomorrow morning with a single game against Texas Lutheran at 9 a.m. (Central Time).
