Men's Hoops Blasts Bearcats, 89-61

SALEM, Ore. - Shane McGaughey-Fick had a triple-double while Brandin Riedel scored a career-high 29 points, spearheading the Pacific Lutheran University men's basketball team's 89-61 blowout win over Northwest Conference rival Willamette University on Saturday evening.

"We had some tremendous individual performances tonight which led to a really satisfying team win for us," said Head Coach Chad Murray.

Riedel was perfect from the floor on Saturday inside Cone Field House, draining all 13 shots he attempted from the floor in the career night that included 29 points and six boards. McGaughey-Fick had an equally memorable outing, scoring 16 points with 10 rebounds and 10 assists.

"We really stressed getting the ball inside to Brandin and establish his presence better tonight. He did a great job working for position inside so he could do what he does best and that's finish."

The Lutes (12-11, 6-8 NWC) established a 21-point gap at the halftime break and never relented in the second half, maintaining at least a 16-point buffer the final 20 minutes to sweep the season series.

PLU led early before a Bearcat three put the hosts up 14-13 with 11:32 left in the opening half. Free throws from Riedel quickly switched the lead back to the Lutes who outscored Willamette (5-17, 1-13 NWC) 34-12 the rest of the half.

Riedel and McGaughey-Fick weren't the only Lutes putting up big numbers. Sam Noland added 11 points and five assists while Liam Johnston had a career night, posting a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Croix Sweeney added nine points while Sean McCurdy had eight.

"Shane had a fantastic weekend capped off with a triple-double. That's a rare thing so I'm sure he'll always remember this weekend. Liam was incredible tonight, especially in the first half scoring and in the second half rebounding really well."

PLU dominated the glass, outrebounding Willamette 49-28, including a 15-8 edge on the offensive end.

The Lutes close out their home slate on Tuesday night, welcoming crosstown nemesis University of Puget Sound to Olson Gymnasium. Tipoff is set for 8 p.m. Fans are encouraged to bring canned goods to donate with free t-shirts given to fans who donate at least five cans while supplies last.
