Chong Wins Twice Against Pirates

TACOMA, Wash. - Jillian Chong won both her singles matches on Sunday but the Pacific Lutheran University women's tennis team couldn't match the firepower of in-state rival Whitworth University, dropping a pair of non-conference dual matches at the UPS Tennis Pavilion. The Lutes fell 8-1 to open the day before suffering a 7-2 setback in the nightcap.

"It was another fun day of tennis with both the men and women playing simultaneously. We had a disappointing loss against a young Whitworth team," said Head Coach Michael Harmon.

"Props to Jillian for winning both her singles matches at court 3. Chloe finished the dual strong with great determination and resilience winning her second singles after just losing to the same player in the first match of the morning. Lilian Nguyen made a fierce comeback winning her second set after dropping the first but came up short in the third set tiebreaker."

In the opening match, Chong took down Kara Nelson, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 3 singles position. Chloe Andrewjeski fell short, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 1 singles while in doubles action Chong and Meggie Burnett battled at No. 2 before ultimately succumbing, 8-4, to the Pirates' (3-3) Nelson and Meredith Bedford.

In the late match, Andrewjeski prevailed, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5) at No. 1 singles, unseating Gracie Smyley while Chong downed Elizabeth Hopkins, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 3. Carmen Kiewert hung tough at No. 5 before running out of gas in a, 6-3, 6-4, setback. In doubles, Chong and Burnett again battled but came up short, 8-4, at the No. 2 position.

The Lutes (6-4) are back on the court on Friday, facing Bellevue College at 7 p.m.
