Baseball Sweeps Loggers for 4th Straight Win

TACOMA, Wash. — Jonathan Cohen struck out six as the Pacific Lutheran University baseball squad extended its win streak to four on Sunday with a 6-4 victory over crosstown University of Puget Sound to sweep the season series.

Cole Trotignon got things started in the top of the first inning, belting a single to left field to plate Andy Schmitz. Schmitz would touch home again in the third inning, this time on an Ashton Barton single to make it 2-0.

Alex Boyd's infield single scored Rochne Beecham in the fourth inning before Braeden Lundberg made it 4-0 with a single that scored Carson Burke.

The Loggers (15-12, 9-11 NWC) got on the board in the fifth with a solo home run before pushing across another run in the seventh.

Pacific Lutheran (13-15, 7-9 NWC) padded its advantage in the eighth inning with a Rutger Youch single to right field scoring Ethan Keintz and Aaron Barber for the 6-2 lead.

The Loggers took one last hack at the lead in the ninth, scoring two but it wasn't enough as PLu held on for the 6-4 win to secure the sweep.

The Lutes pounded out 14 hits on the day with Schmitz, Barber, Burke, and Boyd all finishing with a pair of base knocks. That includes Schmitz belting a double and a triple and scoring twice.

Cohen earned the win, striking out six in six innings of work. Wyatt Norris tossed two innings of relief before turning to Chris Moreno who struck out two in the ninth to retire the Loggers.

"We played with great energy and effort today," said Head Coach Nolan Soete.

"Cohen set the tone on the mound. He did an excellent job today and it was a well-pitched game in general. Norris did a good job bridging the gap to get to Moreno. Moreno was lights out all weekend, he really came through for us when we needed it."

"Offensively, we put together quality at-bats at the right times. Overall, I'm very proud of this team. We've had a lot of ups and downs this year and they've focused on the process and we're continuously getting better in every phase of the game."

PLU's NWC series win over the Loggers continues its streak of dominance over the crosstown rivals, having won the conference series every season since 2005.

The Lutes are back on the diamond on Friday, opening their final homestand of the season with a twinbill against Whitworth University. First pitch is set for 12 p.m.
