COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. --- The Pacific Lutheran Men's Soccer team began their 2023 campaign against a strong Colorado College team on Friday as they came away with a 2-1 victory on the road. Senior midfielder
Craig Johnson lead the Lutes attack with one goal on three shots and two shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the first 45 minutes, the defenses showed their strength, as the score remained tied at zeros. But it was the Lutes offense who began to find their rhythm who had three shots with one on goal. Although the Tigers of Colorado College lead in corner kicks 2-1, senior goalkeeper
Nicholas Gaston and the Lute defense held the Tigers from attempting a shot on goal. Senior
Dane Helle received a yellow card in the 17
th minute.

In the final 45 minutes, the offense picked up what they had in the 2022 season with four shots, two of which on goal that resulted in scores for the Lutes. The Tigers took three shots of their own, getting just one of them past Gaston. Gaston made one save on the other shot on goal. The two goals came from Johnson in the 68
th minute on a penalty kick, and junior
Jordan Ross who opened the scoring in the 47
th minute. Junior
Christian Pineda assisted on the first goal from Ross. Consecutive yellow cards came as senior forward
Robby Guyer and Will Bavier of Colorado College were credited with fouls. The Tigers made a comeback effort in the 82
nd minute with a goal from Oliver Ramirez. The score remained 2-1 for the final eight minutes of the matchup, giving the Lutes their first goal of the season.

Johnson lead with three shots, two of which on goal, and one resulting in a score. Ross and junior
Trevor Thompson each recorded a shot. Freshman
Alvin Kamau and senior Kelly Brandt also recorded one shot each off of the bench. Pineda was the only Lute accredited with an assist in the match. Gaston played the full 90 minutes in goal for the Lutes as he recorded one save and one goal allowed.
