Guyer Nets 2 Assists in Draw with Stags

SALEM, Ore. — Robby Guyer had a pair of assists but it wasn't enough to escape Oregon with the victory as the Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team surrendered a late goal to settle for a 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

The opening half was scoreless at Willamette University's Sparks Field but the Lutes' Sammy Tafolla needed just two minutes to find the back of the net in the second half, scoring in the 47th minute on a shot from 12 yards out with Guyer credited with the helper.

The Stags(2-0-1)  answered in the 67th minute with a goal from Rafael Otero. Trevor Thompson put the Lutes (1-1-2) back on top just over two minutes later, beating the keeper on a shot to the lower right corner from 22 yards out. It was Thompson's second goal of the season with Guyer again receiving credit for the assist.

It was Otero scoring once again for CMS in the 86th minute, netting the equalizer off a rebounded shot.

Claremont outshot the Lutes 15-12 during the match, including an 11-5 advantage in the second half. Both teams finished the game with seven shots on target.

Nicholas Gaston played all 90 minutes in goal, collecting four saves on the day. His counterpart, Kevin Box from CMS, made five total saves.

Pacific Lutheran opens Northwest Conference play on Saturday, hosting Whitworth University at East Field. Kickoff is slated for 2 p.m.
