TACOMA, Wash. — An untimely run early in the fifth set derailed the Pacific Lutheran University volleyball team's hopes of a season sweep against its crosstown nemesis as host University of Puget Sound escaped with the 3-2 victory (17-25, 25-18, 25-16, 16-25, 15-9) at Memorial Fieldhouse.
A
Kailee Efros-Bohn kill started the match as the Lutes (14-6, 9-2 Northwest Conference) tallied the opening five points of set one, including back to back aces from
Makenna Jackson. That lead mushroomed to 8-1 and later 15-3 in the wire-to-wire 25-17 victory.
The roles reversed in the second set with the host Loggers (12-7, 9-2 NWC) surging to an early 6-1 advantage. That lead increased to 8-2 on their way to a 25-18 set two victory to level the match.
Puget Sound tallied eight of the first 12 points in the third set and never looked back, claiming the 25-16 set win. The Loggers owned an 8-6 edge early in the fourth set before Pacific Lutheran rattled off seven consecutive points and 16 of the next 20. An Efros-Bohn kill iced the set 25-16 in favor of the Lutes, forcing a decisive fifth set.
The hosts secured the opening four points of the fifth set, and nine of the first 11 points. It was a deficit that proved to be too steep to overcome, falling 15-9 to their crosstown rivals.
"It's always a great battle against UPS," said Head Coach
Kevin Aoki.
"I really liked how we came back in the fourth set to force the fifth set."
Julissa Pernsteiner led the Lutes with 13 kills with a .269 attack percentage while
Shaela Allen-Greggs tallied 11 kills and Efros-Bohn had 10.
Ayre Takamoto led the team with 38 assists while also netting eight digs while Jackson had a team-best 12 digs along with three aces.
The Lutes are back in action on Friday night, hosting Lewis & Clark College at 7 p.m. inside Olson Gymnasium.
