Men's Soccer Notches Second Draw of the Season Against Puget Sound

TACOMA, Wash. --- The Pacific Lutheran Men's Soccer team (9-1-5, 7-0-4 NWC) ended the season series against cross-town rival Puget Sound (4-4-6, 3-2-6 NWC) with a second draw of the season, this time on the road.

The first shot in the game didn't come until the 13th minute, with the Loggers two attempts missing the target. Senior midfielder Craig Johnson took the first attempt for the Lutes in the 17th minute but was stopped by the Loggers keeper. The Lutes defense locked in and held the Loggers without a shot for the remainder of the first 45-minutes.

Johnson had a pair of shots that were unsuccessful to close out the half, as well as sophomore Alvin Kamau, but the Loggers keeper maintained the shutout. Sophomore Owen Bliskis picked up a yellow card in the closing seconds of the 0-0 draw at halftime.

The second half was much of the same for PLU, controlling the offensive possession and allowing just one shot through the first 30-minutes of the half. Thompson, Bliskis, and Johnson each had numerous header attempts that required quality saves to keep the Lutes off of the scoreboard. Bliskis and senior Jordan Ross came back on the pitch in the 74th minute and made their presence felt quickly as Ross crossed the ball to the far post and found the head of Bliskis to put the Lutes up 1-0 in the 81st minute. Bliskis tallied his fifth goal of the season in an important cross-town matchup.

In the ensuing possessions for Puget Sound, Kamau, Thompson, and Johnson picked up yellow cards in the defensive half. Johnson's in the 88th minute gave thee Loggers a free kick that would immediately lead to the Loggers game-tying score with under two-minutes left to play. The Loggers and Lutes were unable to score in the closing seconds to give the two squads the second 1-1 draw in the cross-town matchup of the season.

The Lutes dominated in the offensive half of the field, maintaining possession for the majority of the contest. PLU took 17 total shots to the Loggers five. With 11 shots on goal, the lone score came from sophomore Owen Bliskis while the Loggers one attempt on-target resulted in the late score. Johnson and Thompson accounted for six shots a-piece with five of Johnson's on-target and three of Thompson's requiring a save. Bliskis came off the Lutes bench to take three shots and score the 81st-minute goal.

The Lutes return home to host Lewis & Clark on East Field this Sunday at 12 p.m. as they look to create separation atop the Northwest Conference standings.
