TACOMA, Wash. — Aaron Barber was three-for-four as the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team poured on the runs on Monday afternoon, ambushing Alfred State College 10-5 in a non-conference game on a rainy day at PLU Field.
"It was a good day for us," said Head Coach
Nolan Soete.
"A lot of good at bats today. Barber, Delisle, Beecham, and Youch stood out offensively. It was nice to see a bunch of pitchers compete today."
Â
It took the Lutes (4-9) a New York minute to get on the board, scoring twice in the first inning. A Barber single through the left side plated leadoff hitter
Brayden Adcox before Barber scored on a triple from
Rochne Beecham.
Â
The Pioneers (4-8) pushed across a run in the third inning, making it 2-1 but the Lutes added three more runs in the fourth inning.
Brody Phinney had an RBI double followed by a
Lukas Delisle RBI single and a sacrifice fly from
Carson Burke.
Â
Alfred State manufactured another run in the fifth but PLU added three more in the bottom of the frame. A Delisle single scored two before a Burke double brought in Delisle, making it 8-2 PLU.
Â
The Lute lead continued to mushroom, scoring in the sixth on a Barber double and again in the seventh on an Adcox RBI single to make it a 10-2 ballgame. Alfred State attempted a late rally, scoring three in the ninth but it wasn't enough as
Trevor Mason recorded the final three outs as the Lutes won their third game over the past three days.
Â
PLU cranked out 13 hits at the plate with Barber leading the way with three hits and two RBIs.
Lukas Delisle had two hits and three RBIs while Burke was two-for-three with two RBIs.
Rutger Youch was the fourth Lute with multiple hits, ending the day two-for-five with a run scored.Â
Â
Wyatt Norris got the start on the hill, striking out three in three innings of action.
Cole Becker earned the win with two innings on the mound, striking out two.
Jake Sulya,
Cade Hamel, and
Stevan Rodriquez all recorded an inning of scoreless relief while Mason closed it out in the ninth.Â
Â
The Lutes return to the diamond on Saturday for a doubleheader against George Fox University in Newberg, Oregon.Â
