Big 4th Inning Allows Lutes to Dethrone Kingsmen, 6-4

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif.— Saturdays are for the Lutes. The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team piled on five runs in the fourth inning to snag a 6-4 victory over host California Lutheran University, extending the squad's good fortunes on Saturdays where the Lutes are 5-0 over the past four weeks.

The host Kingsmen (12-6) struck first, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. PLU (7-12) responded the next half inning pouring on five runs to take a lead they'd hold the rest of the way.

Rochne Beecham got the scoring started with a solo home run before a Hayden Kaiser sacrifice fly scored Aaron Barber to tie the game. A Brody Phinney outfield single plated Ashton Barton before singles from Lukas Delisle and Carson Burke added two more to give the Lutes a 5-2 edge.

Cal Lu added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before a Barton sacrifice fly in the ninth made it 6-4 PLU in what proved to be the final runs of the afternoon.

Kamryn Swartz earned the win, striking out three in 7 1/3 innings of work. Matthew Sherwood earned the save in his first appearance out of the bullpen, striking out one in 1 2/3 innings of work that including a three-up, three-down bottom of the ninth.

"Swartz set the tone on the mound today. He did a great job and Sherwood did a great job getting us out of a jam in the 8th and finishing it for us," said Head Coach Nolan Soete.

"Offensively, we put together a big inning in the 4th and we were able to scratch out a huge run in the 9th to give us more breathing room. We had clutch at bats by a handful of guys today and we look to finish the trip on good note tomorrow."

Barber led the Lutes with two hits while eight total Lutes collected a hit on Saturday.

The Lutes close out their California road swing tomorrow with an 11 a.m. showdown against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges that will be hosted at Chapman University's Hart Park.
