Blues Nip Lutes to Open Weekend Series

TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team had the winning run at the plate against one of the top arm's in the Northwest Conference in the bottom of the ninth but was unable to push across the necessary runs, falling 3-1 to NWC leading Whitman College to kick off the weekend series.

Friday's game was a pitchers' duel between the Lutes' (8-14, 4-5 NWC) Jonathan Cohen and reigning NWC Pitcher of the Year Julien Hernandez. Cohen allowed just one earned run over 7 2/3 innings, striking out four, allowing just one free pass, and tossing 115 pitches on the day. Hernandez went the distance for the Blues, tossing 133 pitches and striking out 14. Anthony Adams finished off the game for the Lutes, allowing just one baserunner in 1 1/3 innings of action.

"It's tough to beat Hernandez. He's one of the best competitors I've seen in this conference over the years," said Head Coach Nolan Soete.

"We gave ourselves a chance to tie it in the ninth, but just came up short. Cohen was excellent today and Adams did a nice job on the back end. We will need to be more offensive tomorrow."

The visiting Blues (12-7, 7-3 NWC) struck first, scoring two unearned runs on a bases loaded single in the top of the third inning. Whitman extended is lead in the eighth, pushing across an insurance run to make it 3-0.

The Lutes threatened in the bottom of the fifth, getting two on courtesy of singles from Brody Phinney and Lukas Delisle but weren't able to push across any runs.

PLU's bats came alive in the bottom of the ninth with Aaron Barber belting a leadoff double. Barber advanced to third and later scored on a pair of wild pitches to make it a two-run game. Carson Burke doubled down the left field line later in the inning pushing pinch runner Sam Richardson to third base and putting the winning run at the plate. Unfortunately for the Lutes, Hernandez included a groundout to third base to end PLU's hopes of knocking off the conference-leading Blues.

Delisle was two-for-four at the plate for the Lutes who were outhit by a slim 7-6 margin on Friday afternoon.

The Lutes continue their NWC series against Whitman tomorrow with a doubleheader at PLU Field beginning at noon.
