Softball Earns Sunday Split in Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Pacific Lutheran University softball team snapped host Lewis & Clark College's six game winning streak on Sunday afternoon, earning a doubleheader split against the Northwest Conference rivals. Paola Garcia and Kamalani Doctor homered in game one but it wasn't enough, falling 9-4 before pushing across two late runs to escape with an 8-6 victory in the nightcap to finish off the weekend series.

"Our defense was strong today," said Head Coach Traci Barrett.

"I thought we did a great job in game 2 of scoring early. Rachel showed us her fight today on the mound, and we had a lot of great things happening offensively. Kamalani came off the bench as a spark in the lineup. Emma got our seventh inning going with a single with Jaycie coming in to pinch run and score. I'm excited to see how we build off our strong finish this week in practice."

The Lutes (11-17, 6-10 NWC) struck first on Sunday with a Rylie Wada single to center field scoring Emma Ware in the top of the second inning. The host Pioneers (19-9, 13-3 NWC) tied the game in the bottom of the second before taking the lead in the third on a two-run home run. Lewis & Clark scored another run in the fourth before belting a three-run home run in the fifth to take a 7-1 advantage.

Paola Garcia answered with a home run of her own in the top of the sixth, her team-leading sixth of the season. The Pios added two insurance runs in the sixth, swelling their advantage to 9-2.

Kamalani Doctor belted her first collegiate home run in the top of the seventh, scoring Wada and narrowing the gap to 9-4 but the Pios retired the next three batters in order to preserve the win.

Seven Lutes finished with a base hit, including Wada who was two-for-two with an RBI, a run scored, and a walk.

Molly House was tagged with the decision inside the circle, pitching four innings with Paige Wilson tossing two frames and allowing just two hits.

PLU's bats were red hot to open up the second game of the day, piling on a half dozen runs in the top of the first.

A Garcia single up the middle got things rolling, scoring Casey Wright before a Molly House single made it 2-0 after scoring Wada. Garcia would touch home plate on an Emma Ware double while a Brooke Tilson RBI fielder's choice made it 4-0 PLU.

PLU's offense kept on humming with a Doctor single scoring Mare before a Wright RBI fielder's choice allowed Tilson to score. When the dust finally settled, it was a 6-0 Lute lead.

Lewis & Clark chipped away at the lead, getting a home runs in the second, third, and fifth innings to tie the game at 6-6.

Casey Wright belted a one-out single up the middle in the sixth inning, advancing to third on a Wada base hit. Wright would later score the go ahead run on a throwing error to give the Lutes' a slim 7-6 edge.

PLU padded that lead in the seventh with a Leslie Main single scoring Jaycie Simpliciano

PLU cranked out 12 hits in the game with Wright, Wada, and Ware all finishing with a pair of base hits.

Rachel Treves went the distance for the second time this weekend, striking out five and walking just one to earn the victory inside the circle.

The Lutes remain on the road next weekend, opening up a four-game series against Pacific University on Saturday in Forest Grove, Oregon. First pitch on Saturday is set for 12 p.m.
