FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Lukas Delisle had three hits on the day but the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team was unable to come away with the series sweep, falling 7-2 to Northwest Conference rival Pacific University on Sunday at Chuck Bafaro Stadium.
Â
"I thought Crawley did a decent job grinding for us and keeping us in the game. We made some defensive mistakes early that cost us several runs and after that we didn't put enough together offensively to make the game more competitive," said Head Coach
Nolan Soete
Â
"It was a tough day, but overall we showed a lot of signs of real improvement this weekend."
Â
PLU (13-22, 8-13 NWC) headed into the game with a chance to sweep the series after hammering the Boxers 12-7 and 16-1.
Â
Pacific (20-12, 8-9 NWC) would jump to an early lead, scoring three runs in the bottom of the first. The host Boxers pushed across single runs in both the second and third innings, building a 5-1 advantage.
Â
Rochne Beecham led off the fifth with a single to center field before advancing to second on a
Carson Burke sacrifice fly. A Delisle RBI single scored Beecham, closing the gap to 5-1.
Â
Pacific added two more runs in the eighth inning before a
Jaden Pieper double plated Beecham in the top of the ninth. Unfortunately for the Lutes, that was the only run they would muster in the ninth, falling 7-2.Â
Â
Delisle finished three-for-four on the day to pace the Lutes at the plate.
Â
John Crawley tossed six innings and struck out one and was saddled with the decision.
Chris Moreno had two punchouts pitching in relief in the eighth inning.Â
Â
The Lutes are back on the diamond next Sunday, making the short drive down I-5 to face in-state rival Saint Martin's University. First pitch is set for noon.
