Softball Knocks Out Boxers for Series Sweep

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — The Pacific Lutheran University softball squad picked up another shutout and another doubleheader sweep, finishing the weekend undefeated against Northwest Conference rival Pacific University. The Lutes downed the Boxers 3-0 in the opener before finishing the series with a 13-5 victory.

Molly House pitched a gem in the opener, tossing a complete game shutout. House allowed just four hits had one strikeout, relying on the Lute defense to get 11 flyouts and eight groundouts.

The game was scoreless until a Casey Wright solo home run in the third inning.

Wright had an infield single in the fifth inning, before stealing second base. Wright would later score on an Emma Ware single, making it 2-0.

House helped her cause in the sixth inning, hitting a sacrifice fly to score Paola Gracia who led off the inning with a double.

Wright finished two-for-four with two runs scored while House was two-for-two with an RBI.

House got the Lutes (15-17, 10-10 NWC) rolling in the nightcap, belting a two-run home run in the top of the first inning. The Lutes added three runs in the fourth, getting RBIs from Zoe Smithson, Syan Yamamoto, and Mattie Cheever before adding three more in the fifth. That included an RBI double from Brooke Tilson and a two-RBI single from Yamamoto.

Pacific got on the board in the bottom of the fifth with two runs but the Lutes offense showed no signs of slowing, piling on five runs in the top of the sixth.

Wright blasted her eighth home run of the season and third of the series in the top of the sixth before Garcia had a bases clearing three-RBI double. Jaimee Cagle made it 13-2w with a double later in the sixth.

Pacific scored three in the sixth but it wasn't enough to avoid the mercy rule.

Wada, Wright, House, Yamamoto, and Cheever all finished with multiple hits as 11 total Lutes had a hit in the game.

Rachael Rhinehart– a day removed from tossing a no-hitter– was back in the circle for game two. Rhinehart struck out five and allowed just three earned runs to secure the victory.

"Molly House throws a shut-out complete game and absolutely owned the plate all day for us! She was dialed and just kept the game flowing with getting outs! Casey Wright was unstoppable behind the plate and with her bat all day! Rachael Rhinehart threw five strong innings and Paige Wilson closed us out to get the win!" said Head Coach Traci Barrett.

"We had many clutch hits on the day and where we didn't make adjustments yesterday we did today! I'm proud of them for how well they finished the weekend strong and will look forward to being at home next weekend."

The Lutes, winners of five straight, begin their final homestand of the season on Saturday, hosting Whitworth University.
