Lutes Drop Makeup Game at Whitworth

SPOKANE, Wash. --- The Pacific Lutheran baseball team made up for a previously postponed game against the Whitworth Pirates, travelling across the state for one game. The Lutes drop the season series against the Pirates with a loss on Tuesday, 10-1.

The Lutes opened the game with Ashton Barton ripping a two-out double to left field, allowing recently named NWC's Player of the Week, Brody Phinney, to drive him in with a single to centerfield. With a 1-0 lead to open the game, freshman Jon Crawley earned the start on the mound for the Lutes in Tuesday's matinee. Crawley sat down the first batter before walking his next two. Crawley was replaced by Chris Moreno after recording one out with the bases loaded due to an error at third base. Moreno was able to get out of the jam with a strikeout and a fly out.

Moreno would give up a one-out triple in the second inning, but once again pitched his way out with back-to-back strikeouts looking. The next inning resulted in another triple in favor of the Pirates, this time Moreno couldn't get off the hook. A hit by pitch and stolen base put runners in scoring position. A single to left field scored the two runners and put Whitworth on top 2-1 through three.

Moreno's day would be done after three innings, replaced on the bump by Trevor Mason to start the fourth. Mason gave up two singles, a double, and two walks before his day would come to a sudden halt, recording just one out and earning three runs. Mason was relieved by Wyatt Norris who came in and ended the inning with a double play.

The fifth inning gave the Lutes their first hit since the opening frame as Jaden Pieper singled to right field. Pieper's stay one the base paths didn't last long though, as Rutger Youch grounded into a double play. Charlie Olson replaced Norris on the mound to begin the home half of the fifth after Norris gave up a single to the leadoff batter. Olson also went just two-thirds of an inning and allowed one run on a passed ball to put the Pirates up 6-1.Whitworth extended their lead in the sixth inning with a solo home run off of Lutes pitcher Anthony Adams.

Whitworth's final additions came in the eighth inning, scoring three runs on a based loaded doible followed by a sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Lutes scattered seven hits in the contest, unable to piece more than two together in an inning. Eight arms made an appearance in the game for PLU, with Moreno going the longest at two and two-thirds innings.

Baseball returns to Luteville this weekend where they host the Linfield Wildcats in a three game series on Saturday and Sunday.
