Thompson Heroics Lift Lutes Past Knights, 2-1

SALEM, Ore. — Trevor Thompson continues to be a scoring machine for the Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team. The senior tallied two goals in the second half as the reigning Northwest Conference Champion Lutes rallied past defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Champion Calvin University, 2-1, in a rare intersectional showdown between national powers at Willamette University's Sparks Field.

"That was a really good win against a very high-quality opponent," said Head Coach John Yorke

"As we close out the preseason it gets us closer to where we want to be to prepare for the Northwest Conference. I'm really proud of the guys' effort today. They played with a lot of heart."

A Calvin cross 90 seconds before halftime deflected off a Lute player and into the goal, giving the Knights (2-3) a 1-0 halftime advantage. That lead proved fleeting with Thompson needing just 33 seconds to equalize the score in the second half, scoring on an assist from Craig Johnson. Johnson struck again just three minutes later, netting the game-winner in the 49th minute on a shot to the far post off a feed from Misha Turchaninov. It was Thompson's team-leading fifth goal of the season.

The two league champions and NCAA tournament qualifiers from a season ago ripped off a combined 41 shots in the game with PLU owning a slim 21-20 edge in those chances, including a 9-4 discrepancy in shots on frame.

Nicholas Gaston made four saves on the night in goal, logging all 90 minutes to register the win while his counterpart had seven saves.

PLU (1-1-1) has tomorrow off before opening its home slate on Sunday, welcoming Warner Pacific University to East Field with kickoff slated for 2 p.m.
