Men's Soccer Takes 34 Shots in 4-1 Victory Over Lewis & Clark

PORTLAND, Ore. --- The Pacific Lutheran Men's Soccer team (4-1-3, 2-0-2 NWC) got back into the win column on Saturday against Lewis & Clark college, returning home after a 4-1 victory. Four different Lutes notched goals in the game.

PLU wasted no time getting to work on Saturday, as sophomores Connor O'Brien and Landon Sexton connected for the first score of the game in the fourth minute. Just five minutes after taking the 1-0 lead, Christian Pineda scored for his second time in three games, extending the Lutes lead to 2-0.

Seniors Trevor Thompson and Craig Johnson, both fighting for the top spot in career goals and points gave their best effort with multiple shots just missing the target early in the 20th minutes. The first shot attempt allowed by the Lutes wasn't until the 26th minute.

Thompson was able to extend the lead to 3-0 in the 32nd minute, off of a pass from sophomore Yuta Shimazu. But not even three minutes later, Johnson matched the forward and scored a goal of his own thanks to the pass from Thompson.

The Pioneers scored on their firth shot attempt of the game, in the 37th minute to make it a 4-1 game heading into halftime. Pineda looked to add his second goal of the game early in the second half, but found the top post. Sophomore Alvin Kamau was given a yellow card in the 58th minute.

An array of shots by Lutes reserve players came late in the game with the Lutes maintaining a three-goal lead. Quinn Bieber, Mattias Anderson, and Mike Murega each recorded shots in the closing minutes of the game. The Lutes cruised to a 4-1 road victory and move to 2-0-2 in Northwest Conference play.

The PLU offense took 34 total shots in the game, with 14 finding the target. The defense held the Pioneers to just seven attempts with two on-frame. Johnson led the team with eight shots, while Thompson was close behind with seven of his own. 13 different Lutes had at least one shot attempt in the game. Senior goalkeeper Nicholas Gaston did not record a save in his 63 minutes played.

The Lutes head back down to Oregon next weekend, as they are set to face George Fox and Pacific on Saturday and Sunday at 12 p.m.
