TACOMA, Wash.— Jacob Schuh shatters 29 year-old single game rushing record for Pacific Lutheran University totaling 332 yards against the Univeirsty of Puget Sound Loggers in a 41-27 win Saturday afternoon.
A record once held by Peter Finstuen of 292 yards was taken down today by the senior running back from Mount Vernon, Wash. Schuh gained 332 yards on only 36 carriers averaging 9.1 yards per rush. He finished with 376 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.
Coming in to today's game the Lutes had won the last four games against the Loggers. In this match up, PLU was looking to progress up the Northwest Conference standings sitting in the middle of the standings with only one conference win. The Loggers on the other hand were looking for their first conference win of the season and also their first win overall.
The game started off with UPS getting an early 3-0 lead from the jump. The Loggers were able to slow down the Lutes forcing a punt on the first drive, but Pacific Lutheran would get the ball back off a fumble
Zachary Gable recovering. The run game of PLU would start to chip away UPS with flurries from Schuh resulting in a field goal from
Evan Harvey to tie the game 3-3. Puget Sound would then answer back driving up the field to up 10-3 with 10:13 remaining in the second quarter. After a couple penalties and a sack derailed the Lutes next drive,
Anthony Mahaffey dialed up the deep ball rifling a throw to
Connor Meade for the 42-yard completion for a score evening up the game at 10-10. PLU's defense would then limit UPS offense to a field goal making the score 13-10. Schuh on the next possession would bust a run over the middle for 49-yard touchdown making the score 17-13 just before halftime. UPS continued to have an answer quickly matching PLU's offense scoring through the air to 20-17 at the half. The Lutes would go on a third quarter tear putting up 17 points with scores from Harvey, Schuh, and a Mahaffey throw to
Jase Ellamar. The defense of PLU held UPS to six first downs and 92 total yards causing three turnovers ( two interceptions from
Will Frank and
JJ Miles; a fumble recovery
Connor Nauta. Puget Sound brought the game withing one-score again late in the fourth quarter scoring with 7:47 remaining. The Lutes called on Schuh again who answered and put the nail in the coffin scoring from 34 yards out with 4:56 remaining giving PLU the victory 41-27.
Pacific Lutheran will be back on the gridiron on October 18th at home as they take on Pacific University with kick-off slated for 1 PM.
