Men's Soccer Dominant First Half Drives Lutes Past Loggers 5-2

TACOMA,Wash.— The Pacfic Lutheran University men's soccer team showcased a blistering level of urgency putting up five first half goals in 39 minutes to down their crosstown rivals the University of Puget Sound 5-2 on the road Wednesday afternoon.

The Lutes extend their overall win streak to three games and improve their record to 9-3-3, 8-0-3 in Northwest Conference play. PLU has now scored 13 goals in their last three contests, while only conceding four goals. Pacific Lutheran has won six out of the last 10 matches against Puget Sound.

"I've been really proud of our guys abilities to score goals," Head Coach John Yorke noted. "We have the potential to be electric at times. It's been different this year to have the goals so spread out for us this season and we've been able to spread it out more evenly. We have to play a complete game on Sunday against Willamette and play a more consistent 90 minutes of soccer not taking any moments off."

Owen Bliskis started the party for the Lutes in the 4th minute cashing in on a flick pass from Yuta Shimazu which he tucked in the net after a collision with the Loggers goalkeeper. Connor O'Brien also joined in on the fun finishing a well-timed through pass from Alvin Kamau in to the back of the net just seven minutes later. Ty Brunner then would put pressure on goal driving the ball forward on the wing laying a pass across which is headed away by a Logger defender resulting in a one-time finish from Shimazu in the 27th minute. Misha Turchaninov felt the momentum the Lutes were playing with and turned up field dribbling through three defenders lacing a shot from outside the 18 yard box into the side netting to put PLU up 4-0. Shimazu capped off the first half, laying his body on the line to finish a shot in the 39th minute off a saved attempt from O'Brien. The Loggers would get a spark in the second half putting up two goals, but PLU's defense quickly stomped on and blew out any idea of a comeback.

Gio Aguilar-Gutierrez garners the win in between the posts logging 90 minutes and totaling five saves. Lutes are the No.1 offense in the NWC averaging 2.733 goals per game and the No. 3 defense allowing 1.47 goals per contest.

Pacific Lutheran will be in action as they return home to East Field on Sunday, October 26th against Willamette University at 2:45 PM.
