Volleyball Smashes Boxers in Halloween Sweep

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — It was all treats and no tricks for the Pacific Lutheran University volleyball team on Friday night, scoring a 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-17) Halloween sweep over Northwest Conference rival Pacific University.

The host Boxers (5-13, 2-11 NWC) opened the match with three straight aces but the Lutes hung tough, using a 4-0 run to take their first lead of the match at 9-8 on a Julissa Pernsteiner kill. PLU (12-8, 10-3 NWC) would go on to take the opening set 25-22 with Shaela Allen-Greggs providing the set clinching kill.

It was Pacific again taking an early lead in the second set, staking an early 7-1 advantage. The Lutes quickly neutralized that lead, scoring nine straight points to seize a 15-9 lead. Eight of those points came off the serve of Bailey Johnson who tied the set at nine with an ace. PLU further extended its lead with a 7-0 run, part of an overall 16-1 spurt to stake a 22-10 lead. A Haley Goto kill cemented the set win 25-13 in favor of visiting PLU.

The nightmare continued for Pacific in the third set, again taking an early lead only to see it slip away with a Pernsteiner kill ending the set 25-17 in favor of the Lutes to secure the sweep and extend the squad's win streak to five.

Allen-Greggs was dialed in on Friday night, boasting a match-high 11 kills and a .458 attack percentage, finishing the night with no errors. Pernsteiner had nine kills while Alexis Eggert added nine.

Ayre Takamoto had 29 of the team's 34 assists while Macy Matsushima anchored the defense with 17 digs while Je T'aime Paio and Bailey Johnson both had 11.

"Any win on the road is great in our conference," said Head Coach Kevin Aoki

"It was a nice way to start this road trip. We have a tough match against Linfield tomorrow night in our final regular season road match."

The Lutes play their final road match of the regular season tomorrow evening, squaring off against Linfield University. First serve in McMinnville is set for 6 p.m.
