SPOKANE, Wash. — It was a defensive slugfest on Saturday inside the Pine Bowl. The visiting Pacific Lutheran University football team kept Northwest Conference leading Whitworth University out of the endzone in the second half but it wasn't enough to pull off the upset, coming up short 10-6.

The Lutes (4-4, 3-2 NWC) were driving later in the second quarter, marching to the Whitworth two-yard line, but the Pirates (6-2, 5-0 NWC) picked off a pass on first in goal from the two to preserve the 7-0 advantage, a lead they'd take into the halftime break.Â
