NEWBERG, Ore. — Braeden Lundberg cranked out four hits while
Brody Phinney had three hits and three RBIs, providing the offensive juice for the Pacific Lutheran University baseball team to finish off the series against Northwest Conference rival George Fox University with an 8-5 victory at Morse Field.
Â
"It was a big bounce back performance for us today," said Head Coach
Nolan Soete.
Â
"Lundberg was locked in and had a big day with four hits while Phinney had a huge home run. I thought the bullpen did a great job. Swartz and Lopez competed at a high level today and overall it was a good team win."
Â
The homestanding Bruins (6-7, 3-3 NWC) manufactured a pair of runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead. The Lutes (5-6, 3-3 NWC) got on the board in the top of the second inning with a
Peter King Rbi ground out scoring Phinney.Â
Â
Aaron Barber would put PLU up 3-2 in the third, belting a single to center field to score both
Carson Burke and
Rutger Youch. GFU reclaimed the lead in the third with a two-RBI single but a Phinney two-run home run in the fifth, made it a 5-4 ballgame.
Â
The Bruins tied the game in the fifth but the Lutes pushed across single runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to take the game by an 8-5 score.
Â
A Lundberg double scored Beecham for the go-ahead score in the sixth while a Phinney RBI single scored Barber in the seventh. Burke concluded the scoring in the eighth, hitting a ball to left field that allowed Youch to touch home plate.
PLU banged out 15 hits on the day with Lundberg going four-for-five along with a walk as the leadoff hitter. Phinney was three-for-four with three RBIs and two runs scored while Burke and Barber both had a pair of hits.
