CLERMONT, Fla. — Division III teams at the Spring Games will be happy to see the Pacific Lutheran University softball team board a flight back to the Pacific Northwest. The Lutes were simply dominant at the three-day tournament, winning all six games by a combined 59-6 margin, including the PLU pitching staff tossing two no-hitters and two one-hitters.
Â
That included a pair of blowouts on Sunday, smashing Saint Joseph's College (Maine) 18-2 to open the day before topping Washington College 9-1.Â
Â
"We went into the weekend, knowing that we needed to clean up our defense and get our pitchers more dominant in the circle. We had a great approach at the plate no matter what pitchers we faced and it was fun to see a couple of our first-years stepping up in big ways," said Head Coach
Traci Barrett.
Â
"Bri was phenomenal behind the plate the last two days and at the plate offensively did a lot of really great things as well. Bri and Zoe are a really tough duo in our lineup to face and Zoe had one of the best weekends I've ever seen a player have offensively."
Game one on Sunday saw Saint Joseph's (0-1) score twice in the first inning but it would be all Lutes (10-2) after that in the mercy rule win.Â
Â
PLU piled on a half dozen runs in the second inning, getting an RBI single from
Brooke Tilson to score
Addy Meyers for the first run of the day while
Bri Sarae scored on a passed ball to tie the game. A
Zoe Smithson single put the Lutes on front before getting an RBI double from
Kamalani Doctor and a two-RBI single from
Brookelyn Gutierrez.
Â
Four more runs poured in during the third inning with
Syan Yamamoto driving in
Emelia Maza on an infield single before
Zoe Smithson bopped a three-run home run to make it 10-2.
Sarae had a bases clearing triple in the fourth while a
Jaycie Simpliciano single scored Sarae for a 14-2 cushion.
Kimara Blakely belted a two-run home run in the fifth while Tilson and Simpliciano both had RBI hits later in the frame to make it 18-2.Â
11 total Lutes had a hit in the win, including Sarae going three-for-three with three RBIs and three runs scored.Â
Rachael Rhinehart earned the win inside the circle, allowing just one hit and striking out four in four innings of work.
Maiya Anderson had one strikeout and allowed no base runners in the final inning of play.
Game two against the Shorewomen was scoreless until Meyers blasted a two-run home run in the fourth inning, plating
Morgan Calcagno. Washington College pushed across a run on a bunt in the fifth inning but PLU responded in the bottom of the frame with a seven-run explosion, that included a grand slam from Smithson.
Smithson's grand slam scored Yamamoto,
Mya Grado, and Simpliciano before Doctor made it 7-1 with a solo home run. A Tilson single scored a runner later in the inning before Sarae scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-1 and enact the mercy rule.Â
Â
PLU had eight hits in the nightcap with all eight coming from a different Lute. A day removed from tossing a no-hitter,
Rachel Treves was at it again, going the distance and allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out three.
"Addy was stellar at first base for us this weekend. It's cool to watch the team come together, figure out how to be great teammates, and support one another."
Â
Smithson finished the Spring Games with an eye-popping .619 batting average, going 13-for-21 at the plate with 18 RBIs. That includes eight of her 13 hits going for extra bases, including three triples and two home runs.
Â
The Lutes are back on the diamond on Saturday, opening Northwest Conference play at home against nationally-ranked Linfield University.
