SALEM, Ore.— The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team duel back and forth with Willamette Unversity Bearcats resulting in a 3-3 draw on Saturday afternoon.
The Lutes overall record improves to 4-3-1 and 3-0-1 in Northwest Conference play. The last three matches against the Bearcats have resulted in ties.
A game that was physical throughout, both sides seemed like they had an answer for each other. There were a total of five yellow cards given to both sides and PLU led the way in total fouls 17-16.
Bearcats opened up scoring first in the 39th minute 1-0 Willamette. 30 seconds later, PLU draws a penalty kick, which
Misha Turchaninov stepped up to take and equalized the game 1-1. Lutes would then draw another penalty kick later in the match in the 67th minute.
Connor O'Brien decisively netted a shot to the upper left corner to give the Lutes their first lead of the game 2-1. Quickly answering back in less than a minute, Willamette combo of passes finds an open Bearcat on the backside lacing one in to the goal to tie the game 2-2. O'Brien capitalized on a set piece free kick from just outside the box whipping in a shot that blew pas the keeper to give PLU the lead in the 72nd minute 3-2. Willamette answered once again in the 76th minute playing a ball in that was tucked away to tie the game up at 3-3.
Gio Aguilar-Gutierrez logged all 90 minutes in goal and posted seven saves in the contest.
Pacific Lutheran returns to play Saturday, October 4th against NWC opponent Pacific University. Kick-off is slated for 2:45 PM.
