Lutes Strike Late to Top Whitman

TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Whitman College on Saturday afternoon at East Field, using a late goal from Owen Harned to secure the Northwest Conference win.

With the match scoreless through the first 83 minutes, Harned found the back of the net in the 85th minute, finishing a play assisted by Mike Murega to give the Lutes the decisive advantage.

The teams battled through a physical first half, with both sides creating scoring opportunities but neither able to break through. Pacific Lutheran goalkeeper Gio Aguilar-Gutierrez helped keep the match level, making several key saves as the Lutes continued to search for an opening.

Pacific Lutheran maintained the pressure after halftime, generating seven shots in the second half. The breakthrough finally came at 84 minutes, when Harned scored his second goal of the season off Murega's assist.

The Lutes' defense held firm down the stretch, preserving the shutout and securing the one-goal victory. Aguilar-Gutierrez finished with six saves, matching Whitman's Niclas Isensee, while the Lutes held a 14-12 advantage in total shots and a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.

The win improves Pacific Lutheran to 8-1-2 overall and 6-0-1 in Northwest Conference play, keeping the Lutes unbeaten in conference action. Whitman falls to 7-2-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the NWC.

The Lutes return to action tomorrow at noon, hosting the Whitworth University Bearcats.
