Softball Smashes Regals in DH Sweep

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — The Pacific Lutheran University softball team was in midseason form on Saturday afternoon, cranking out 33 hits in a doubleheader sweep of host California Lutheran University. The Lutes blanked the Regals 8-0 in the opener before steamrolling the hosts 12-0 in the nightcap where Maiya Anderson carried a no-hitter into the final inning.

Paige Wilson tossed a complete game shutout in game one, striking out seven and getting run support from a Lute offense that cranked out 16 hits to open the doubleheader.

PLU (7-3) opened the scoring in the second inning with a Jaycie Simpliciano single through the left side, scoring Mya Grado who reached base earlier in the inning on a double to right field.

The Lutes doubled their lead in the top of the third with a Grado sacrifice fly scoring Lex Ahlo-Garcia

Pacific Lutheran plated three runs in the fourth inning courtesy of RBI singles from Bri Sarae, Ahlo-Garcia, and Emelia Maza, making it a 5-0 advantage.

Zoe Smithson hammered a three-run home run in the fifth inning, scoring Paola Garcia and Kaya Collado to make it an eight-run buffer.

The host Regals (4-12) loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth but was unable to produce a run as the Lutes secured the mercy-rule win.

Sarae and Garcia both finished three-for-four at the plate while Ahlo-Garcia, Simpliciano, and Smithson all ended the game with multiple hits.

The Lutes were firing on all cylinders to start off game two, piling on nine runs in the top of the first inning. Collado, Garcia, and Smithson led off the game with consecutive singles to load the bases. An Ahlo-Garcia single up the middle with one out plated two before a Maza two-bagger made it 3-0 in favor of the Lutes.

A Grado double scored Maza and Ahlo-Garcia before Collado had her second hit of the inning, scoring Grado for a 6-0 lead. Garcia singled in Alexa Saladin to make it 7-0 before a Kamalani Doctor single down the line added two more for a 9-0 Lute edge after just one inning of play.

PLU added to the lead in the third inning with a Garcia single scoring Simpliciano while an RBI single from Doctor scored Collado for an 11-0 cushion.

Maza led off the fourth inning with an infield single, later scoring on a Collado single to left field, making it a dozen runs for the Lutes.

Maiya Anderson, the reigning NWC Pitcher of the Week, threw a gem. Anderson had a no-hitter through 4 1/3 innings and finished the game with six strikeouts while allowing just one hit and no walks.

11 different Lutes had a hit in game two. Collado finished three-for-four with two RBIs and three runs scored while Garcia went three-for-three with two RBIs and two runs scored. Docter finished with two hits and a team-leading three RBIs.

"Paige and Maiya combined for 10 shutout innings for the day. We're so excited about the dominance they showed today," said Head Coach Traci Barrett.

"Offensively, we carried over some of the plate adjustments we made yesterday and passed the bat. We're super excited about having more power at the plate today as well as executing with savvy baserunning. Kaya was stellar in game two at the plate after getting the opportunity when Bri went out in game one. Emelia had several clutch hits and drive in multiple runs. We made good strides defensively with only one error on a hard hit ball."

The Lutes close out their California trip tomorrow with arguably their toughest test of the trip, facing 19th-ranked Chapman University in a doubleheader.

"We look to carry today's performance at the plate into tomorrow's doubleheader and we're so thankful for our senior leadership and the unity of this team."
