Short-Staffed Lutes Stumble to River Otters

PORTLAND, Ore. — The Pacific Lutheran University women's lacrosse team was short two of its usual starters on Sunday afternoon, putting up a valiant effort but ultimately falling 22-0 to host Lewis & Clark College in a non-conference showdown at Griswold Stadium.

"Our roster was not at full strength today and that allowed for other players to step up in big ways," said Head Coach Melanie Rizzotti.

"Emily was a force in the midfield and took control on the draw. When you look between the stats, we had a lot of moments of growth and while the score does not reflect it, we got better today."

The host River Otters (5-1) scored in the opening minute and built an 8-0 edge after one quarter of play and led 14-0 at the halftime intermission. PLU's defense buckled down in the second half, allowing just two goals in the third period.

Lewis & Clark's Ala Cross headlined the day with seven goals and three assists.

Kassie Diller made seven saves in goal and led the Lutes with four ground balls. Samantha Velasco Patiño had two ground balls as a team-best three caused turnovers. Emily Mejia had five of PLU's nine draw controls on the day with Paige Hackman and Gracie Cecka both finishing with two.

Offensively, Katrina Moran ripped off two shots while Hackman and Issabella Marchio had one apiece.

The Lutes (1-5) are back in action on Monday, March 23, hosting Lawrence University (Wisconsin) in a midweek matinee. Opening draw at East Field is set for 1 p.m.
