TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University softball team closed out its four-game series against the Loggers of the University of Puget Sound with a doubleheader sweep Sunday, winning 10-0 in five innings and 10-5.
The Lutes scored 20 runs on the day, improving to 18-6 overall and 10-2 in Northwest Conference play. Pacific Lutheran is now tied for first in the NWC standings with Linfield Univerity. Puget Sound fell to 4-17 overall and 2-9 in conference play.
Pacific Lutheran has won 12 straight meetings in the series, outscoring the Loggers 105-30 during that span.
In Game 1, Kamalani Doctor put the Lutes ahead early with a three-run home run to left-center field. Alexa Saladin followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
The Lutes broke the game open in the third inning, batting around and scoring seven runs to extend the lead to 10-0.
Paige Wilson earned the win, improving to 9-1 after tossing four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out six. Mila Hargrave closed out the game with a scoreless inning of relief.
In Game 2, Doctor again sparked the offense with an RBI to give Pacific Lutheran a 1-0 lead in the first inning. Puget Sound answered in the third to tie the game at 1-1.
The Lutes regained control in the fourth, scoring five runs on four hits. Saladin, Megan Landes, Kaya Collado and Paola Garcia each recorded RBI in the inning.
Puget Sound cut into the deficit with two runs in the fifth, but Zoe Smithson responded with a solo home run to extend the lead to 7-3. Saladin added a sacrifice fly later in the inning, and Landes drove in another two runs to push the advantage to 10-3.
The Loggers scored two runs in the seventh, but Rachel Treves and the Lutes' defense closed out the game.
Treves earned the win, improving to 3-3 after pitching a complete game, allowing five runs and striking out four.
Pacific Lutheran returns to action Friday, April 3, traveling to face George Fox Universtiy. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
