Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga— The Pacific Lutheran University softball team dropped their final two games against the Pfeiffer Univeristy Falcons 3-2 in game one and against No.5 ranked St. Marys University (Minn.) Cardinals 8-0 on Sunday.
"The Leadoff is a great event because you play six different opponents," Head Coach
Traci Barrett noted. "We showed ourselves who we can be and who we don't want to be in all six games. Leadership emerged on the field in
Paola Garcia, so great to have her back after a medical year off,
Bri Sarae,
Jaycie Simpliciano,
Zoe Smithson,
Kamalani Doctor,
Lex Ahlo-Garcia all did a great job on both sides of the ball this weekend. California is the next opportunity to respond, grow, and play the kind of softball we know we're capable of.
Game one was a battle defensively as both team would have opportunities to make something happen offensively. The Falcons would get on the board driving a run in off a double take the lead 1-0.
Rachel Treves got the start in the circle for PLU hitting her spots getting various batters to fly out and ground out over the first two innings. Pfeiffer would capitalize on strong base running in the 3rd and get another run and go up 2-0. The next two innings would present more defensive action back and forth as both teams wouldn't budge, until the falcons found an opening in the top of the 5th scoring non single to right field bringing in one run to make the score 3-0.
PLU would make a late push in the bottom of the 6th as
Bri Sarae would lead things of with a single.
Paola Garcia would match drilling a single to center field.
Lex Ahlo-Garcia then would capitalize and drive in two runs off a single to left field 3-2.
Pfeiffer would do just enough to stymie the Lutes comeback as they had two runners on 1st and 2nd with one out left. Garcia and Ahlo-Garcia led the way offensively for PLU finishing with a combined 3-for-7 with three hits and two RBI.
Treves finished 6.0 pitched allowing eight hits and six strikeouts.
Game two against the No. 5 ranked team in Division III St. Marys Cardinals aimed to be a competitive game.
Paige Wilson got the start pitching for PLU tossing 4.0 innings with nine hits and one strikeout. The cardinals would capitalize on several errors from the infield in the fourth inning to balloon their lead to 7-0 and ultimately call the game for a run rule at 8-0 in the 5th.
Leading the way offensively for the Lutes was
Jaycie Simpliciano who went 2-fo-2 on two hits.
PLU will return to action for another road trip this time in California starting on March 13 as they take on Pamona-Pitzer Colleges, California Lutheran University, and Chapman University.
