ORANGE, Calif. — The Pacific Lutheran University baseball team showed offensive flashes Saturday but dropped both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Chapman University, falling 4-3 in Game 1 and 14-6 in Game 2.
Pacific Lutheran drops to 9-16 overall and 7-8 in Northwest Conference play.
PLU totaled 20 hits on the day, including 13 in game two, highlighted by multi-hit performances from several Lutes.
In Game 1, PLU rallied late with runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a two run advantage. Dallas Phipps drove in two runs, while Asa Reese and Rutger Youch each collected two hits. The Lutes' pitching staff limited Chapman to just two hits, but were hurt by timely extra-base hits late in the eighth inning as the Panthers sealed a 4-3 win.
PLU jumped out quickly in Game 2, scoring four runs in the first two innings. Ethan Keintz led the offense with three hits and two runs scored, while Brody Phinney added two hits and an RBI. Asa Reese and Rutger Youch each drove in a run as the Lutes built an early 3-0 lead after the first.
Chapman responded with a big middle stretch to take control, but PLU continued to produce at the plate, finishing with six runs and 13 hits.
The Lutes return to action on Saturday, April 18 against Whitworth University at home. Opening pitch set for 12 p.m.
