Lutes Bats Find Long Ball Often Taking Two Games From Bearcats

TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University softball team powered its way to a doubleheader sweep of Willamette University on Saturday, winning 10-1 and 6-2 behind six combined home runs.

PLU improved to 23-7 overall and 15-3 in Northwest Conference play, remaining tied for first with Linfield University. Willamette fell to 9-21 overall and 6-12 in conference.

Paige Wilson earned the win in Game 1, improving to 13-1. She allowed one run on three hits over five innings, striking out two.

The Lutes jumped out early, scoring four runs in the first inning. Kaya Collado and Paola Garcia reached base and scored on wild pitches before Aby Redwine added an RBI single. Alexa Saladin capped the inning with a groundout that brought home another run.

Willamette responded with a run in the second, but PLU answered immediately. Kamalani Doctor drove in a run with a single, and Saladin added an RBI double in the third to extend the lead.

Garcia delivered the decisive blow with a grand slam later in the inning, giving the Lutes a 10-1 victory.

In Game 2, Maiya Anderson went the distance, allowing two runs on six hits over seven innings to improve to 9-4.

PLU continued its power surge with five home runs from four different batters. Saladin opened the scoring with a solo shot in the second inning. Collado followed with a home run in the third, and Garcia went back-to-back with a blast to center field to make it 3-0.

Willamette cut the deficit to 3-2 in the fourth, but Paityn Mackin answered with a solo home run. Garcia added a two-run homer later in the game to seal the 6-2 win.

Garcia finished with multiple home runs for the third time this season.

Pacific Lutheran returns to action Sunday against Willamette. First pitch is set for 11 a.m.
