One of the most dominant players in program history, Stacey Hagensen enters the PLU Athletics Hall of Fame after making an impact at the plate and inside the circle, transforming the Lutes from a .500 team to national champions.
Hagensen originally chose PLU because she wanted to attend a school on the West Coast that had small class sizes, strong academics, and where she could continue to play the sport she loved.Â
The Bellevue, Washington native was a First Team All-Northwest Conference selection as a first-year in 2009. Hagensen did it all, finishing the season with 13 wins inside the circle, tossing 19 complete games and four shutouts with 51 strikeouts and a 2.96 earned run average. At the plate, Hagensen was a .351 hitter with 17 extra base hits, seven home runs, and 28 RBIs. Hagensen was the NWC Pitcher of the Week in mid-March, striking out 11 in 12 innings of shutout ball against both George Fox University and Lewis & Clark College.
Hagensen's sophomore season was even better, earning First Team All-Conference and Second Team NFCA All-West Region honors. Hagensen hit .424 at the plate in 2010, racking up 43 RBIs and blasting eight home runs while making 15 appearances in the circle. Her output helped the Lutes improve on the diamond, finishing the season with a 23-15 overall record and a 17-11 mark in conference play.Â
As a junior, Hagensen earned Third Team All-American honors and First Team All-West Region honors from the NFCA as a utility player. The NWC Player of the Year, Hagensen helped the Lutes finish the season with a 31-13 overall record and a 23-5 mark in conference play, PLU's best record since the 2003 season. The Lutes took another step forward in 2011, advancing to the NWC Tournament title game where they fell to No. 1 ranked Linfield College. Inside the circle, she had a 2.30 earned run average, throwing 18 complete games with five shutouts. At the plate, Hagensen hit .367 with eight home runs and 39 RBIs while leading the team with 43 runs scored and 16 stolen bases.
Â
Hagensen was simply dominant as a senior in 2012, powering the Lutes to their third national title and first in NCAA Division III. Hagensen was the NWC Pitcher pf the Year for the second straight season and was an NFCA Second Team All-American. Hagensen tossed a no-hitter against Lewis & Clark College on April 7 and twice was named NWC Pitcher of the Week. But Hagensen saved her best for when it mattered most in the postseason, allowing just two hits in PLU's 3-0 win over defending national champion Linfield College to win the NWC Tournament and punch a ticket to the NCAA Championships.
Â
Hagensen was unstoppable during PLU's eight game NCAA tournament run, pitching all 58 innings to lead PLU to the title. Hagensen struck out 37 during that run with a minuscule 0.60 earned run average. During the four games at the NCAA Finals in Salem, Virginia, Hagensen allowed just three earned runs across 31 innings, issuing just one walk, while also going five-for-15 at the plate with three RBIs to secure the Tournament's Most Outstanding Player Award. In the title game against defending champion Linfield, Hagensen allowed just three hits in a 3-0 shutout of the Wildcats, finishing the season with six total wins against the Oregon rivals.Â
Â
That season, Hagensen was tabbed the Honda Sports Division III Player of the Year as the top female in the division across all sports while also landing First Team CoSIDA Academic All-American honors, NWC Woman of the Year honors, was an NCAA Post Graduate Scholar, and was one of 10 finalists for the NCAA Woman of the Year.Â
Â
Behind Hagensen's incredible success was a strong network of fellow Lutes that supported her during her career. That included coaches Erin VanNostrand and Greg Seeley, pitching coach Tiffany McVay, Associate Athletic Director Jen Thomas, Athletic Trainer Gen Ludwig, and math advisor Dr. Tom Edgar.
"I had an incredible experience at PLU and met many people who are still my best friends. I was lucky to play with talented teammates and we've continued the close relationships we made while playing together."
