TACOMA, Wash. — The Pacific Lutheran University men's soccer team continued its strong start to Northwest Conference play on Sunday, cruising past George Fox University 3-0 at East Field.
Connor O'Brien brought the energy for the Lutes, scoring twice in just 26 seconds midway through the first half. O'Brien opened the scoring in the 16th minute, finishing a feed from
Preston Soeum before striking again moments later off an assist from
Ty Brunner.Â
Pacific Lutheran carried the 2-0 advantage into halftime after outshooting the Bruins 9-4 during the opening 45 minutes. The Lutes continued to control play after the break, adding another goal in the 60th minute when Brunner found the back of the net off an assist from O'Brien.Â
The defensive effort was equally impressive as the Lutes recorded their second consecutive shutout.
Landon Gordon and
Gio Aguilar-Gutierrez split time in goal, with each goalkeeper making one save to preserve the clean sheet.Â
"That's a great way to start a NWC regular season. Two wins at home and two shutouts. Couldn't have asked the boys for a better start," said Head Coach
John Yorke.
With the win, Pacific Lutheran improves to 4-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in Northwest Conference play, while George Fox falls to 1-4-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference action.Â
"It was a good performance by numerous players as we were able to go deep into our roster this weekend and get lots of great efforts from many different people."
The Lutes' victory capped their first conference homestand of the season with a pair of wins and two shutouts.
