Michael Byrne

Byrne returns to his alma mater as an assistant coach prior to the 2019 season. Byrne worked as a defensive assistant in 2019 before moving to offense for 2020 as the quarterbacks coach. In 2021 he will serve as the Director of Football Analytics. 

Byrne's coaching experience includes coaching at all three NCAA divisions along with stints at the high school level. Bryne got his start in collegiate coaching as the assistant quarterback and wide receiver coach for the Lutes during the offseason after his senior year. Byrne then spent two seasons (2010 and 2011) with Texas A&M University as the football operations and offensive senior intern. His tenure saw the Aggies win the Big 12 South title and make the Cotton Bowl along with winning the Texas Bowl. 

He spend the next season at Division II West Texas A&M University as the program's running backs coach. He helped guide the Buffaloes to the Lone Star Conference Championship in 2012 and a spot in the NCAA Division II Tournament semifinals. The following year he returned to Texas A&M, spending three more seasons with the Aggies as a graduate assistant and assistant running backs coach. His second stint at A&M saw the Aggies earn three bowl bids (Chick-Fil-A, Liberty, and Music City) while ranking fourth in FBS in total offense in 2014, amassing 538.4 yards per game.

Byrne spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as the co-offensive coordinator at Vandegrift High School in Austin, Texas, helping Vandegrift make two trips to the state playoffs and winning the District Title in 2018. Prior to Vandegrift, Byrne spent one season as the co-offensive coordinator at Rudder High School in Bryan, Texas.

Byrne earned a bachelor of arts in history from PLU in 2009 while earning a masters of science in sport management from Texas A&M in 2012. Byrne started his college career at FCS Iona College, earning MAAC Academic All-Conference honors before transferring to PLU to finish his playing career where he was a two-year starter, team captain, and All-Northwest Conference selection at quarterback in 2008.
