Mike Hayward re-joins the PLU men's basketball coaching staff as an assistant prior to the 2021-2022 season. Hayward was previously on staff with the Lutes during the 2018-2019 season before spending the past two years at Division II Simon Fraser University. 

Prior to Hayward's first stint at PLU, the former Washington Huskie spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Division II Saint Martin’s University. While on the staff at Saint Martin’s, the Saints qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history (2018).

Hayward played college ball at the University of Washington where he was a power forward and Pac 10 Conference Freshman of the Year in 1988, where he averaged 14 points per game. He started 111 of 113 games in his career, scoring over 1,000 career points. Hayward continued playing basketball overseas for seven years with teams in Finland, Australia, France, Austria, Korea, and Switzerland.

Hayward has his bachelors in Romance languages from the University of Washington and has an MBA in International Business from European University – Montreux (Switzerland).
 
Hayward is married to Laurie Wetzel, who was University of Washington's first NCAA volleyball All-American. They have two daughters who are both collegiate athletes.
