Andrew Lum joined the Pacific Lutheran University Athletic Department in the summer of 2022 as the Lutes' Head Coach for the men's and women's swimming programs.

Lum's 2025-2026 women's squad finished third at the NWC Championships in Boise, Idaho, the program's highest finish since 2022 while boasting a 6-2 record during the dual meet season. That effort included eight different student-athletes earning All-Conference honors, including Emma Gassman earning First Team honors in two events. The Lute men's squad placed fifth at the conference meet, its best placing since 2022. Three Lutes landed All-Conference honors, including Tyler Tanaka winning All-League recognition in three events.

The 2024-2025 season saw four women earn All-Conference honors including Riley Maher claiming First Team honors in multiple events. The Lute men's team had three All-Conference winners, including Tyler Tanaka who was runner-up in the 200-yard breaststroke. The men's and women's teams closed the year by earning CSCAA Scholar All-American Team honors.

Lum's 2023-2024 women's squad placed fourth at the NWC Championships with Lum earning NWC Coach of the Year accolades. Jessica Ordaz won the NWC title in the 100-yard butterfly while the Lutes also won the NWC title in the 400-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyler relay. All told, between the men's and women's squad, 10 student-athletes were named All-Conference, accounting for 23 total All-League citations. The men's and women's teams closed the year by earning CSCAA Scholar All-American Team honors.

Lum made a splash in his Lute debut in 2022-2023, guiding the women's team to a 5-3 dual meet record against the Northwest Conference and placed fourth at the 2023 NWC Championships.

Lum headed to Luteville with 10 years of combined experience at the NCAA Division III level as a student-athlete and coach. Lum spent the last three seasons at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse as an assistant coach. During that time, Lum helped the women’s program win the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Championship in 2022 and 2020, coaching 11 individual conference champions and six relay champions. His stint with the Eagles included success in the classroom with the women’s team boasting a program record 3.74 grade point average and the men recording a 3.41 GPA.

“It’s a privilege and honor for me to have this opportunity as the Head Swimming Coach at PLU,” said Lum.

“I'd like to thank Mike Snyder and the search committee for their trust and confidence in me to respect, and build upon, the Lute legacy that Coach Sellman established during his 12 year career at PLU. I'm excited to return back to my roots in the NWC, and I look forward to the challenge of continuing the exemplary level of academics, athletics, and community engagement with this program in the conference and beyond!”

Prior to UWL, Lum spent two seasons at California Institute of Technology as an assistant coach. While with the Beavers, Lum helped the program break over 20 school records, net three Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champions, and one Honorable Mention All-American. His tenure at Caltech included winning the SCIAC Coaching Staff of the Year Award in 2018.

Lum began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant for the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh during the 2016-2017 season.

No stranger to the Northwest Conference, Lum was a swimmer for four years at rival Willamette University. Lum was the Bearcat Rookie of the Year in 2013. A leader on campus, Lum worked as an admissions ambassador, was the President of the NWC and Willamette Student-Athlete Advisory Committees, and was the recipient of the NCAA Division III Ethnic Minority Student Grant in 2015.

Lum graduated from Willamette in 2016 with a degree in exercise science and a minor in Chinese studies. He earned a master’s degree in intercollegiate athletic leadership from the University of Washington in 2019.
