Adam Frye

Adam Frye was named head coach for the men's and women's cross country and track & field programs in the summer of 2016 before transitioning to just the head coach for the cross country programs in the summer of 2022. Frye's tenure has seen the Lutes win four individual national titles, win one NWC team title, win 35 NWC individual titles, and earn 15 All-American honors. 

During the 2022 track & field season, Frye guided the Lutes' men's and women's programs to runner-up finishes at the NWC Championships. Ava Nelson went on to win a national title in the javelin, the fourth individual national champion under Frye's watch. The women's team ended the season with a 12th place finish at the NCAA Championships.

Frye guided the Lutes to one of their best seasons in 2021 with the women's track & field program finishing ninth in the nation at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships, PLU's best finish since 1999. Bailey Forsyth won national titles in both the 100-meters and 200-meters and was named the NWC and West Region Track Athlete of the Year. The Lutes finished with four All-American honors at the 2021 NCAA Championships while at the NWC Championships, the Lutes won nine individual NWC titles (two men, seven women) with the women's squad placing runner-up.

Under Frye's direction the men's cross country program won a share of the Northwest Conference title in the fall of 2018, hoisting the league title for the first time since the 1997 season. The Lutes closed the cross country season by placing fifth at the NCAA West Regional.

During the spring of 2019, the women's track & field team finished third at the NWC Championships with Kelsey Hathaway (long jump), Lauren Wilson (high jump), and Ava Nelson (javelin) winning NWC titles. Nelson was additionally tabbed as the NWC Freshman of the Year while Nelson, Wilson, and Emily Reeder all earned All-American honors at the NCAA Championships. On the men's side, Kyle Rapacz won NWC Championship in 3,000-meter steeplechase for the second year running and was one of the five Lutes to compete at the NCAA Championships. 

Frye's second season in 2017-2018 saw the Lute track & field program take another historic step forward. the Lute men won four individual titles at the 2018 Northwest Conference Championships guiding the team to a runner-up showing, the Lutes' best finish since the 2000 season. Brad Hodkinson was named NWC Track Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season and ended the season competing at the NCAA Division III Championships in two events. Under Frye's direction, Machaela Graddy won the conference title and national title in the javelin and was later featured in Sports Illustrated for her efforts. During the cross country season, the Lutes men finished runner-up at the NWC Championships for the second straight year while finishing fifth at the NCAA West Regional. Hodkinson closed out the season with another strong showing finishing seventh overall to earn All-American honors at the NCAA Division III Championships. 

In his first season as coach, the Lute track & field program won six individual titles at the 2017 Northwest Conference Championships with Brad Hodkinson earning NWC Men's Track Athlete of the Year while Vakeaemanu Hunkin secured NWC Women's Freshman of the Year accolades. The PLU men finished third at the NWCs, the program's best performance since 2012 while sending both Hodkinson and Machaela Graddy to the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships. In cross country, he guided the Lute men to a runner-up finish with Hodkinson ending the year as an All-American. 

Frye revived the indoor competition season for the Lutes in 2017 with six student-athletes securing USTFCCCA Indoor All-Region accolades while six student-athletes also earned USTFCCCA Outdoor All-Region honors in the spring.

Frye joined the Lute staff after spending the previous year as the head girls cross country coach at Sammamish High School in Bellevue, Washington. In addition, Frye served as an assistant coach for the Totems' boys and girls track & field programs, working with the throwing events.

Prior to Sammamish, Frye served two stints at Division III Hamline University in Saint Paul, Minnesota, first as an assistant from 2007 to 2009 before returning to the Pipers from 2012-2015. During his second stint, Frye was elevated to co-head coach for both the men's and women's track & field and cross country programs. Between stints at Hamline, Frye was an assistant from 2009-2012 at his alma mater Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.

As a collegian, Frye served as team captain for both the cross country and track & field programs as a senior, helping the Norse win the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title in cross country in 2006 along with a sixth place showing at the NCAA Division III Championships. Frye was also named the team's Most Improved in track & field during the 2015 season.

Frye graduated from Luther with a bachelor of arts in physical education and a minor in history and received a master of arts in kinesiology from the University of Minnesota. He is a USATF level one certified coach and owns certification from the USTFCCCA Track & Field Academy in program management, injury management, and sports psychology.
