SALEM, Ore. - Willamette limited visiting Pacific Lutheran to
just two shots in the match and scored a pair of second half goals
to take a 2-0 win in a Northwest Conference women's soccer match
played here Sunday afternoon.
Willamette moved to 5-7-0 overall and to 4-4-0 in the Northwest
Conference, while PLU is now 2-9-0 overall and 2-6-0 in the
NWC.
After the teams played to a 0-0 tie through the first half,
freshman Sabine Wetzel scored her third goal of the season to
give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute. Wetzel re-directed
a pass from Maddy Grainger to score the goal. Grainger has three
assists this season.
Senior Alex Batzer added a second goal for Willamette in the 81st
minute, the assist going to Elena Johansen. The goal was
Batzer's fourth of the season.
Willamette senior goalkeeper Kelli Gano earned the shutout in goal,
her second this season. She made one save as the
Bearcats controlled the ball for most of the game. Willamette
finished with 10 shots, five of them on goal, forcing three saves
from PLU keeper Lauren
Chambard.
The Bearcats finished with a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
