REDLANDS, Calif. - Ramona Lorton shut down nationally ranked
Redlands in the second game as Pacific Lutheran split a
non-conference softball doubleheader with the Bulldogs on Wednesday
afternoon at Field of Dreams. Redlands won the opener, 8-5, before
the Lutes came back to record a 4-0 shutout.
Lorton improved her record to 6-1 in pitching the Lutes to the
victory. She limited the Bulldogs to four hits, did not walk a
batter and struck out four. She retired the side in order three
times and at different times retired nine in a row and eight in a
row. She also helped her own cause by stroking two of the Lutes'
seven hits.
PLU scored twice in the first when both Amber Roberts and
Caitlin Brown raced home on Lauren Watson's infield single. Monti Califano scored a run in the second on a Redlands error, and the
final tally came in the fifth on Kaely Cuthill's RBI single.
In the opener, PLU took a 2-1 lead in the third inning on Kaaren Hatlen's two-run homer, but Redlands took advantage of two Lutes
errors to score three runs and take a 4-2 lead in the fourth on the
way to the 8-5 victory.
The Bulldogs held an 8-2 lead in the top of the seventh when
Stacey Hagensen ripped a three-run homer with two outs.
The Lutes finished with eight hits, including two each by
Hagensen, Cuthill and Califano.
With the split, the Lutes are now 13-6 for the season. They
conclude their five-game California spring break trip with a single
game at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Thursday afternoon.
