PARKLAND, Wash. - Pacific University pitchers Chelsey
Chamberlain and Miranda McNealy both threw complete game
five-hitters to lead the visiting Boxers to a Northwest Conference
softball doubleheader sweep of the host Pacific Lutheran Lutes on a
sunny Sunday afternoon.
Chamberlain improved her record to 8-5 as the Boxers took a 7-2
victory in the opener, and McNealy is now 9-4 after leading her
team to a 6-2 win in the second game.
The first contest was tied 1-1 after four innings, both teams
scoring on solo home runs in the second inning. Billingsley
connected for Pacific (17-11 overall, 12-4 NWC) in the top of
the inning and Glenelle Nitta replied for the Lutes (15-11,
9-7) in the bottom of the frame.
Pacific broke the game open with three runs in the fifth inning,
benefitting from three hits and a pair of PLU errors. Brooke Toy
drove in two runs with a single through the middle and the third
run came on a throwing error. One inning later, the Boxers added
three more runs on Jessie Garcia's three-run homer.
PLU's final run came in the bottom of the seventh inning on
Haley Harshaw's first collegiate home run.
Chamberlain finished the game with five strikeouts and two
walks. Kelly Nishitomi, Ashley Billingsley and Garcia all had a
pair of Pacific's 10 hits in the game, while no PLU player had
more than one hit. Stacey Hagensen went the distance for the Lutes
and took the loss.
McNealy was a little better than her teammate in the second
game, giving up a pair of unearned runs while striking out six and
walking just one.
The Boxers got on the board in the first inning when Brooke
Fogwell hit a single to drive in Stephanie Vanoudenhaegen, who was
hit by a pitch leading off the game. The Lutes scored an unearned
run in the second when, following a two-out error, Montessa
Califano hit a two-out single to drive in Nitta, who reached on a
double.
Pacific broke the game open with five runs in the fourth inning.
It loaded the bases on singles by Chamberlain and Fogwell and a
walk to Billingsley. Jordan Mittelsdorf followed with a two-run
double, and one out later Jenna Scribner hit another two-run
double. The inning's final run scored on an illegal pitch.
The Lutes added their final run in the fifth inning when Amber
Roberts reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and third and
then scored on Kaely Cuthill's RBI base hit.
Fogwell and Scribner both had three hits and Teri Shigeno added
a pair for the Boxers, who finished with nine hits against three
PLU pitchers. Ramona Lorton pitched into the fourth inning and took
the loss for PLU. Ally VanSchoorl, the third Lutes pitcher, shut
out the Boxers on three hits in 3 2/3 innings.
