WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Pounding out 20 hits, Pacific Lutheran
finished a three-game Northwest Conference baseball series sweep of
the host Whitman Missionaries with a 23-1 win on Saturday afternoon
at Borleske Stadium.
The romp keeps the Lutes, 19-6 overall, in first place in
the baseball standings with a 10-2 record in the NWC. Whitman
slipped to 3-12 in conference and 3-23 on the season.
The Lutes swung the sticks to the tune of eight runs in their
first two at-bats and then broke the game open with four more runs
in the fourth inning.
Sammy Davis, Dan Johansen and Josh Takayoshi belted home runs,
combined for eight of Pacific Lutheran's 20 hits and collected a
total of 10 RBI. Davis had three hits and four RBI, Takayoshi
collected three hits, three RBI and scored four runs, and Johansen
had two hits and three runs driven in.
Jason Sease and Eric Korsmo had two hits apiece for
Whitman, which plated its lone run in the bottom of the ninth. With
the Missionaries down to their last out, John Nortz walked and
scored when Mitch Hannoosh doubled into the left-center field gap.
Scott Wall got the pitching victory for the Lutes with five
innings of four-hit ball. He fanned four and walked one in upping
his record to 4-1.
Pacific Lutheran returns to action at 4 p.m. Thursday
with a non-conference game against Seattle University at
Bannerwood Park in Bellevue.
