BELLEVUE - Paul DiPietro pitched seven innings of three-hit
baseball and his teammates scored all of their runs in the seventh
inning as Pacific Lutheran defeated Seattle U., 6-0, in a
non-conference game played Thursday at Bannerwood Park.
DiPietro, a senior making his first start in 11 appearances this
season, struck out five, walked six and did not allow a Redhawks
base runner past second base. DiPietro improved his record to 3-0
with the help of Robert Bleecker and Trey Watt, both of whom did
not allow a hit in one inning of work.
While DiPietro was shutting down Seattle U., his Lutes teammates
were having little success against Redhawks pitcher Max Whieldon,
at least until there were two outs in the seventh inning. By the
time the inning was over the Lutes had scored six runs against
three different Seattle U. pitchers.
Corey Moore started the rally with a single and then stole
second, and pinch hitter Carl Benton drew a walk and was replaced
on the base paths by Jacob Olsufka. Ben Shively came to the plate
and put PLU on the board with a two-run double to left-center
field. Consecutive walks to Jaron Iwakami and Sammy Davis loaded
the bases for Josh Takayoshi, whose single through the middle
scored two more runs. After Dan Johansen loaded the bases with a
single, Ryan Aratani hit a single to left field that drove in the
final two runs.
Aratani, a junior outfielder and the team's leading
hitter, led PLU's nine-hit offense with three singles.
Johansen added a pair of base hits for the Lutes, who improved
their season record to 20-6 with the victory.
The Redhawks, 3-22 this season, got a runner as far as second
base in the third, fourth, sixth and seventh innings, but none made
it as far as third base.
Pacific Lutheran returns to Northwest Conference action this
weekend with a three-game home series against the Whitworth
Pirates. The teams play a doubleheader starting at noon on Saturday
and conclude the series with a single nine-inning game beginning at
noon on Sunday.
