Lutes Cruise Past College of Idaho in Season Opener

Pacific Lutheran took the top two spots in every event but one Friday night to swim away from visiting College of Idaho, 173-23, in the season opener for the Lutes at the PLU pool.

Frosh Toni Castillo was a double-event winner for the Lutes, taking the 50 freestyle (25.69) and 100 butterrfly (1:00.03). Other individual event winners were Kina Ackerman in the 1000 freestyle (11:21.25), Emma Thompson in the 200 freestyle (2:06.29), Mackenzie Carlson in the 200 individual medley (2:22.38), Michelle Hogan in the 100 freestyle (56.42), Darla Avis in the 100 backstroke (1:03.43), Courtney Karwal in the 500 freestyle (5:49.60), and Rachel Althauser in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.65).

The Lutes also dominated in the two relay events, taking the top five places in both. In the 200 medley relay, the team of Avis, Althauser, Castillo and Elizabeth Althauser won with a time of 1:56.06. In the 200 freestyle relay, Kristin Neuneker, Hogan, Thompson and Rachel Nelson combined for a winning 1:45.50.

The Lutes host the annual Alumni Meet tomorrow morning and then return to action on Friday, Oct. 28, at the NWC Sprints hosted by Whitworth University in Spokane.
