PLU Sweeps Aside Pioneers in NWC Baseball

PORTLAND, Ore. - Pacific Lutheran collected 29 hits in sweeping a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader from Lewis & Clark on Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 8-4 and taking the nightcap 14-1.

The Lutes had 13 hits in the first game, including three each by Brock Gates and Ryan Frost in the No. 4 and No. 5 spots in the batting order. Dan Johansen, Corey Moore and Nicholas Hall all had a pair of runs batted in, and both Frost and Johansen hit their third homers of the year.

Max Beatty benefitted from the offensive support, improving his record to 5-3 while allowing four runs, three earned, on nine hits in seven innings. Nic Delikat and Frost both pitched an inning of scoreless relief. Frost entered the game in the bottom of the ninth inning with two runners on base and no outs, but pitched out of the jam to record his fourth save of the season.

Jacob Hoffman had four hits and scored four runs and Gates, Ryan Aratani and Hall all had a pair of hits for the Lutes in the second game. Jordan Chargualaf hit a pinch hit three-run homer in his only at-bat.

Johansen was the beneficiary in the second game, allowing only one run on six hits in seven innings of work. He struck out eight and walked two as he improved his pitching record to 4-2 this season. Scott McGallian and Nathan Eisenhauer both threw a scoreless inning of relief.

By scoring a run in the second game, the 143rd of his career, Aratani broke the all-time PLU runs scored record, surpassing the old mark of 142 set by Jay Chennault (1997-2000). Two weeks ago, Aratani broke the record for career runs batted in. With his next double and with three more hits, he will also hold those PLU career records.

The Lutes, 17-14 overall and 12-8 in the conference wrap up their three-game series against Lewis & Clark (5-31, 3-20) with a single nine-inning game at noon on Saturday.
